Abstract

Brazil, now experiencing extremely rapid economic growth, is at the same time facing with various environmental and social problems due to the rapid migration of people from rural to urban areas including chronic traffic conjunction, disordered urban expansion, unequal food distribution and issues on public health. Such problems are, however, found not only in Brazil but also in the rest of the world including countries in Asia. At this session Japanese scholars, who have mainly been studying Asian countries, will be collaborating with Brazilian scholars to discuss pathways for realizing sustainable cities and urban areas in Asian countries and Brazil by identifying similarities and differences in urban and environmental issues between the two geological locations.
