Abstract

Chile and Japan are located on opposite ends of the Earth, but share a connection across the Pacific. Taking into account the distance as well as this shared linkage that brings the countries closer, we will discuss a wide range of cross-cutting issues surrounding both countries, including the following:

1. Since Japan and Chile both have natural environments characterized by mountains relatively close to the ocean, are there any commonalities in terms of optimal coastal management between the two countries?
2. Due to their Pacific coastlines, both countries can be vulnerable to tsunamis triggered by the same earthquake, so do they also share common disaster preparedness or prevention measures?
3. As parties to the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) which promotes free trade between the two countries, what are their views towards the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)?
